Satchel Paige is nominated to Baseball Hall of Fame

February 9, 1971: Baseball was segregated when Paige began playing in the 1920's, so being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame is an incredible achievement! He was a pitcher, with statistics including playing 2,500 games, having 300 shut-outs, 55 no-hitters, and pitching 29 consecutive games in one month!

Nelson Mandela becomes the first black president of South Africa February 9, 1994: Mandela is most known for successfully leading the resistance to South Africa's policy of apartheid (system of segregation and discrimination based on race) in the 20th century. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, and served as South Africa's first black president from 1994-1999.
